Modern Times started as a 30-barrel production brewery and tasting room in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego in 2013. The team of brewers, coffee roasters, and culinary wizards named its venture after a utopian Long Island community that existed from 1851 to 1864 and was based on the ideas of individual sovereignty and equitable commerce. Staying true to the theme, almost all of Modern Times beers are named after real utopian experiments and mythological utopias, and in 2017, Modern Times became California’s very first employee-owned brewery.
